Kurt Busch was in the right place – in front of the mayhem.

RESULTS: KOBALT TOOLS 500

Busch turned in a couple of superlative restarts to plant himself in first place and win the Kobalt Tools 500 Sprint Cup race in extreme overtime at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday.

Although the victory was a landmark one for Busch and his new crew chief, Steve Addington (formerly pit boss for Kurt’s brother, Kyle), the talk over the next few days is likely to be about a spectacular late-race crash involving two guys who won’t join the same fraternity – Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski.

With two laps remaining in regulation, Edwards ran into the rear of Keselowski’s car on the frontstretch, turning Keselowski and sending the car high into the air. The Dodge landed hard on its roof, flipped onto its wheels and hit the wall.

Keselowski was not injured, but he was quite upset. Edwards admitted tapping Keselowski but said he didn’t intend for Keselowski’s car to go on such a wild ride.

Edwards, whose car was damaged early in the race after contact from Keselowski, was blackflagged after the crash.

The ensuing caution forced the race into overtime, and two green-white-checkered restarts were needed to finish the race. When the checkered finally flew, the race had stretched to 341 laps – 24.6 miles past the advertised distance of 500.5 miles.

Busch jumped out front on the first green-white-checkered attempt, but his rush to the finish was slowed on the first lap when a multi-car crash erupted in the third turn.

That set up the second (of three possible green-white-checkereds), and Busch again sprinted to a comfortable lead on the green. This time, the field completed two laps safely, and Busch had his first win of the season.

“I’m just so happy to bring this car home to victory lane,” Busch said. “Even with all the restarts at the end, I felt like we had the car to beat.”

Busch led 129 of the race’s 341 laps. Only Kahne – at 144 – led more.
