Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch has Kyle Busch’s former crew chief, but Kurt hasn’t talked with his younger brother about why Steve Addington was released as Kyle’s crew chief at Joe Gibbs Racing.

Kurt said Addington’s resume of 12 victories in the last two years was enough to convince him to give Addington a serious look and eventually have him hired as his crew chief.

“If Steve Addington came from Hendrick Motorsports or if he came from Richard Childress Racing, it didn’t matter who the driver was, he was that caliber of a crew chief that you want on your team,” Kurt Busch said Saturday at the preseason Fan Fest at Daytona International Speedway.

“To win 12 races in the last two years, that’s solid. Nobody in the garage area has that type of track record other than Jimmie Johnson and a couple of others.”

Addington was released in late October and replaced by JGR Nationwide Series crew chief Dave Rogers. At that time, it had been about two months since Kurt Busch had learned his crew chief, Pat Tryson, was going to Michael Waltrip Racing after the 2009 season.

By December, Addington was Kurt Busch’s crew chief.

“The day that Kyle learned that Steve Addington was going to be making a change, or Gibbs was going to be making a change, we were doing a family portrait for our Christmas cards, and he was like, ‘Wait a minute, what’s going on?’” Kurt Busch said. “And I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I asked him at the end of the conversation, I said, ‘Can you give me Steve’s number?’ He told me to go find it on my own.”

Kurt Busch said he has not found the time to talk to him about Addington.

“He’s been very busy with his [Camping World] truck program, getting things up and going,” Kurt Busch said. “And he now is the payer of 50 employees, he’s got a lot on his table.

“So I’ll slide in once the season gets under way, talk with him about some of the good and the bad about Steve Addington. But hopefully it’s all good.”
