Kahne turned a lap at 187.183 mph in an RPM Ford Friday to win the pole position for Sunday’s Carfax 400 Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Kahne is scheduled to drive for Red Bull Racing next season as a way station on his trip to Hendrick Motorsports in 2012. He plans to complete this year at RPM, however.

“I blew through turns one and two and felt really good,” Kahne said of his pole lap. “I got to turn three, and I wasn’t too sure. I pushed the nose a little. I felt like one and two was where we got the pole because we were really good there.”

Kahne, winless and 17th in points entering Sunday’s race, scored his second pole of the season.

Kahne edged defending series champion Jimmie Johnson, who ran 187.086 and was the only other driver over 187.

Following the top two were Clint Bowyer, who is battling Mark Martin for the 12th and final Chase qualifying spot, Tony Stewart and Juan Pablo Montoya, the series’ most recent winner.

Failing to qualify in the 47-car time-trial group were Mike Bliss, J.J. Yeley, Scott Riggs and Casey Mears.
