Kasey Kahne scored a stunning upset victory in the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV Saturday night at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, gambling on old tires to win more than $1 million in his Gillett Evernham Dodge Charger.

Kahne defeated the Roush Fenway Racing Fords of Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth, with Jimmie Johnson finishing fourth in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Tony Stewart completed the top five in a Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

After three segments were completed, the cars made mandatory pit stops, with Johnson and Kahne opting not to take tires and taking the top
two places.

When the track went green, Denny Hamlin took the lead from Johnson and Kahne, but third-segment winner Greg Biffle was charging hard and Johnson challenging Hamlin for the lead.

After 80 laps, the order was Hamlin, Kahne, Johnson, Biffle, Newman and Kenseth. Two laps later, Kahne began pressuring Hamlin hard for the lead and the $1+ million winner’s share of the purse.

On Lap 84, though, Hamlin’s engine blew, turning the lead over to Kahne, ahead of Biffle, Johnson and Kenseth. On Lap 92, Kenseth took third from Johnson.
