Kasey Kahne passed Kevin Harvick on a restart with 11 laps to go to claim victory in the Pep Boys Auto 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday night.

Kahne’s victory in his Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge Charger solidified his hopes of qualifying for the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Harvick held onto second place in his Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya’s Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Chevy. Completing the top five were David Reutimann’s Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota and Mark Martin’s Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Martin Truex Jr. and Kahne started from the front row, and Truex took the lead at the start, with Kahne falling in behind him.

Sam Hornish Jr. spun coming out of Turn 4 on Lap 36, which brought out the first yellow flag of the race. Kahne claimed the lead on pit road under caution, after Truex had led the first 38 laps. But when the race resumed on Lap 42, Truex immediately went back out front.

Hornish spun again on the frontstretch on Lap 60 to send the yellow flying a second time. The leaders pitted again, with Kyle Busch taking the lead on pit road over Truex, Kahne, Johnson and Denny Hamlin.

The field restarted on Lap 65, Busch pulling away smartly, as Johnson took second over Truex, who had led 58 of the first 61 laps. On Lap 72, Johnson assumed the point for the first time, opening a lead of 1.258 seconds over Busch in just five laps.

On lap 83, Caution No. 3 was displayed after Carl Edwards’ Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion ruptured its oil cooler. Busch won the race out of the pits again over Johnson, Truex, Hamlin and Tony Stewart. Under caution, Kenseth stayed out to lead a lap and earn 5 bonus points.

The green came out on Lap 87, Busch holding off Truex as Johnson fell to third. Nine laps later, though, Truex’s Chevrolet blew by to retake the lead once again.
