Jimmie Johnson will start the Chase on top.

Johnson won the pole Saturday for Sunday’s GEICO 400 Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway and will begin his search for a sixth series championship from the No. 1 perch.

Johnson ran a fast lap of 182.865 miles per hour.

Following Johnson in the top five were Aric Almirola, Matt Kenseth, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Carl Edwards.

In the second five were Kasey Kahne, Regan Smith, Denny Hamlin, Clint Bowyer and Joey Logano.

Johnson has won five Sprint Cup championships – all in the Chase era.

The 12 Chase drivers had a wildly diverse qualifying session. Those who had speeds outside the top 10 – Tony Stewart 29th, Greg Biffle 22nd, Brad Keselowski 13th, Kevin Harvick 35th, Martin Truex Jr. 18th and Jeff Gordon 19th.

Although Johnson has run exceptionally well here, Chicagoland is one of five Sprint Cup tracks where he remains winless.

He said he really wants to win at the 1.5-mile track because his crew chief, Chad Knaus, is from nearby Rockford. Asked if Knaus has guests at the track for the weekend, Johnson smiled and said, “No, he doesn’t have many friends.”

Johnson said he has been “real close” to winning at Chicagoland. “Some things have worked against us. I’ve dropped the ball, and we’ve had some things work against us.”

Johnson is not known as an exceptional qualifier.

“It’s too early in the Chase to be over-the-top excited or down and out if you didn’t qualify like you wanted today,” he said. “But qualifying [well] makes the race so much easier with the first pit stall and track position.”
