CUP: Finch, Busch To Decide Future
James Finch will meet with Kurt Busch next Tuesday...
Phoenix Racing team owner James Finch said he will meet with Kurt Busch next Tuesday to discuss the embattled driver’s future with the team.
“We're going to meet the next week and have a come-to-Jesus meeting,” Finch said Tuesday morning in an interview with SIRIUS/XM NASCAR Radio.
Busch was suspended for one race by NASCAR on Monday, following a confrontation with Sporting News reporter Bob Pockrass after Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway.
It was Busch’s fourth high-profile incident since last September’s race at Richmond International Raceway. He was already on NASCAR-imposed probation for running into Ryan Newman’s car on pit road following the conclusion of last month’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Busch and Penske Racing parted ways following the final race of 2011, when the driver launched into an obscenity-laced tirade against an ESPN pit reporter.
With no good rides available, Busch and Finch reached a one-year, handshake deal for Busch to drive the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet, the idea being that this would be an interim stop for Busch until a top ride became available in 2013.
At the time, Finch said of the deal, “He (Busch) can’t quit and I can’t fire him.”
But that may be changing.
“(Kurt) needs to either get his mind right or he's going to be working somewhere else,” Finch told SIRIUS/XM. “... Quit wrecking cars. Be nice to people. That's not hard to do.”
David Reutimann will drive the No. 51 in Busch’s absence this weekend. Reutimann normally drives for Tommy Baldwin Racing, but Baldwin allowed him to race for Finch this weekend at Pocono. Dave Blaney will pilot the No. 10 Chevrolet that Reutimann usually drives, and Tony Raines will return to the No. 36 Chevrolet.
“I understand the position James was put in this week,” said Tommy Baldwin. “As an owner of a small team, I wanted to help him out. We talked and thought that this lineup would be best for both of our teams.”
