Lowe’s Motor Speedway President and General Manager H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler will formally announce his retirement later today, track officials confirmed to SPEEDTV.com Wednesday.
Wheeler, 69, generally regarded as the best promoter in NASCAR history and the sport’s P.T. Barnum, H.A. is also an executive with Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns Lowe’s.

He was hired by what then know as Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1975 and was named general manager a year later and president in 1980. He has been the president, chief operating officer and a director of SMI since its organization in 1994.

Under Wheeler’s leadership, Lowe’s Motor Speedway became known for setting a number of firsts in the motorsports world, including
becoming the first superspeedway to host night racing with the addition of a $1.7-million lighting system in 1992. The speedway was also the first to offer extensive VIP suites, condominiums and extravagant pre-race entertainment, which included staging recreations of military invasions and the giant fire-breathing car crusher. Robosaurus.

Born in Belmont , N.C. , Wheeler attended the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship and graduated in 1961 with a degree in journalism. Prior to joining Lowe's Motor Speedway, Wheeler worked as a sports writer, a television director, a real estate manager and a track operator for several dirt tracks. He also served as director of racing at Firestone Rubber & Tire Co. during its most visible years in the sport.
