Lowe’s Motor Speedway President and General Manager H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler has been called the P.T. Barnum of stock-car racing, an extraordinarily clever and talented racing promoter.
He also has an exceptionally keen eye for talent, something he puts to good use every May when he annually makes his pick about who will win the NASCAR Sprint All-Star race. In 19 tries, Wheeler has correctly picked the race winner 10 times, an impressive percentage given the size of the field.
Wheeler pays rapt attention during testing at Lowe’s Motor Speedway to see who truly hotfoots it through the corners of the 1.5-mile oval and who is merely just good. That eye for talent and aggressiveness has allowed Wheeler to correctly pick a number of upset winners over the years, including then-rookie Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2000.
On Wednesday, Wheeler will unveil the name of the driver he believes will win the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, which will be run at LMS on May 17 and televised live on SPEED. In a statement released by track officials, it was stipulated, “Wheeler will utilize four-legged friends from the canine community to make his annual prediction of who will win the
NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.”
Additionally, the statement said, “Although Wheeler has ‘barked’ up the wrong tree with his last two picks, he … promises a purebred prediction for 2008.”
