As seasons go, 2009 couldn’t have been much better for Hendrick Motorsports and team owner Rick Hendrick: Jimmie Johnson won a record fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship, finishing ahead of his Hendrick teammates Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon to give the team a 1-2-3 sweep of the Cup points standings, something never before accomplished in NASCAR history.

Aside from the well-publicized struggles of Dale Earnhardt Jr., the team had about as good a season as humanly possible. So what do they do for an encore for next season?

The answer is, keep working at it.

2009 Hendrick Motorsports Victories

“The thing that fires me up, I think, is that when I listen to Jimmie and Chad (Knaus) or Mark and Alan (Gustafson) or Jeff or Dale — we’ve all met — everybody’s all fired up for next year, to be better next year,” said Hendrick. “ … We’ll have to see how it unfolds as the year goes on, but I can tell you, Jimmie’s just as hungry as he was for the first one and Chad is, too. And this past week I’ve been talking to the guys about what they can do better.”

Hendrick said he doesn’t expect success to come easily next year. “There were so many teams running well at the end of the year, the Childress cars, the Penske cars, the Gibbs cars, you know it’s going to be a dogfight,” he said. “We’ve just got to come back and work hard and do the things we did again and see what happens.”
