Sam Hornish Jr. will be the first driver to qualify for the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard on Saturday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Hornish, who won the 2006 Indy 500 here, leads a list of 46 drivers who will attempt to qualify for the race, annually one of NASCAR’s biggest and most prestigious.

“This Mobil 1 team has made a lot of progress at tracks with flatter surfaces like Indy,” said Hornish. “We ran strong at New Hampshire recently, and at Pocono, which is similar to this track. We earned top-10 finishes at both tracks this season and we hope to have a solid performance this weekend at Indy. No one has ever won both the IndyCar and NASCAR races at the Brickyard, and I would love to accomplish that one day.”

Unlike most tracks, Indy is a track where drivers want to qualify first, because qualifications take place in the morning, which makes the track warmer and slicker as the days goes on.

A total of 46 cars are entered for the race, which means 11 drivers will vie for the final eight spots in the field.
