The Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets continued to impress in the second of two rounds of practice for Sunday’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Two-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson topped the second practice session Friday afternoon at the Brickyard, where his best lap was 180.047 miles per hour in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

His teammate, four-time Brickyard winner Jeff Gordon, was just a tick behind at 180.007 mph, meaning the two Hendrick Chevys were the only cars to break the 180 mph barrier.

Third fast was the embattled Ryan Newman, a lame duck at Penske Racing, who ran 179.723 mph. Newman’s former teammate, Rusty Wallace, said earlier in the day that Newman had been fired by team owner Roger Penske for next season, while Newman maintained he quit. (See related story).

Kasey Kahne’s Gillett Evernham Dodge (179.076 mph) and the Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet of Kevin Harvick (178.934 mph) completed the top five. Elliott Sadler, who was fastest in the first practice, was sixth, while Patrick Carpentier, Mark Martin, Carl Edwards and Dale Earnhardt Jr. completed
the top 10.

A total of 47 cars will attempt to make the 43-car Brickyard field, with qualifying set for 10:10 a.m. Saturday and two more one-hour practice sessions to follow at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
