Hendrick Motorsports, which has seen drivers Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon win eight of the past 10 NASCAR Sprint Cup races at Martinsville Speedway, continued to look strong in the rain-shortened second round of practice for tomorrow’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500.

Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Gordon swept the top three spots in practice before rain cut out the final 15 minutes. Jamie McMurray’s Roush-Fenway Ford and Aric Almirola’s DEI Chevy completed the top five in the session.

Gordon, who has seven Martinsville victories and poles, will start Sunday’s race from the top spot. Although he currently sits 14th in points, he dismissed suggestions that he’s having a sub-par season.

“I don't mind people saying, ‘Hey, you are 14th in points, you aren't having the type of year you had last year.’ It bothers
me when somebody says we aren't running good because we have been running great,” said Gordon. “There is a big difference in my opinion between running good and finishing good. … We have been running strong, we have been leading laps and running up front. But, the competition has stepped up and we have to step up along with it as well. We certainly need to be better.”

Gordon said he hoped to win again this weekend. “Being here on the pole, hopefully we can continue that on through the weekend,” he said. “I know how it works, I can win this race and everybody will say, ‘Oh, he is back, everything is great, perfect, no problems.’ That is just the way the world works that we live in."
