Persistent rain washed out qualifying for Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Pain Relief 500 Sprint Cup race Friday at Martinsville Speedway.

The weather also canceled qualifying for Saturday’s Kroger 250 Camping World Truck race.

Point standings were used to set the field for both starting lineups, meaning Kevin Harvick will start on the pole for each race.

“Obviously, this is a good place to have this happen,” said Harvick, not necessarily a superb qualifier and never a Sprint Cup winner at Martinsville.

He will be joined on the 500 front row by Matt Kenseth, whose team is second in Sprint Cup points and who, also, is not a spectacular qualifier.

“I don’t really qualify (well) anywhere but especially here,” said Kenseth, who has never started a race at Martinsville higher than 10th.

Harvick chimed in: “This could be the worst qualifying front row you’ve ever seen.”

The major benefit for Harvick and Kenseth is the ability to pick first and second in the pit selection process. Martinsville’s pit road is particularly tight.
