When Kevin Harvick walks into a track media center, you never know what you might get.

You might get the pleasant Kevin Harvick, his broad smile demonstrating why they call him “Happy.” He can be witty and colorful, with a personality that could seemingly charm a snake.

Or you might get the ornery, testy Harvick, the fierce competitor who can stare a hole through an oak tree and cut glass with his sharp tongue.

More often that not, you get both, his mood changing faster than Southern fall weather.

Asked Friday if he needed to hit a home run to catch points leader Jimmie Johnson, Harvick, Richard Childress Racing’s marquee driver quickly said, “Or, just hit him!”

Then he laughed. “No, I’m just kidding,” he said, and then laughed again. “Kinda.”

Moments later, Harvick’s mood turned cold.

“Kevin, you’re running a black paint scheme on your car next season. Is that a tribute to [Dale] Earnhardt, or does it carry any special significance?”

“Nope.”

Do you have a mindset for what you want to do this weekend, a certain points gap that you want to close?

"I just told you what I wanted to do this weekend. I want to do what we've been doing. I want to go out and race as fast as our car will go and race my own race."

When another reporter remarked that he was almost afraid to ask a question, Harvick barked, “Ask a good question and you’ll get a good answer.”

That’s Harvick, a fierce competitor who can’t stand to lose, who demands the best from himself, his team and even the media.
