The Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolets were as strong as they as they always are at Martinsville Speedway, but it was Virginia native Denny Hamlin who topped the speed charts in Friday’s opening round of practice for Sunday’s Goody’s Cool Orange 500.

Hamlin lapped the 0.526-mile Virginia short track at 95.338 miles per hour in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, best of the 47 drivers who practiced Friday afternoon.

Hot on his heels, though, was a veritable armada of Hendrick Chevys, with two-time defending race winner Jimmie Johnson second at 95.275 mph and seven-time Martinsville winner Jeff Gordon fourth at 95.175 mph, one spot ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had a best lap of 95.161 mph.

Reed Sorenson crashed the Hendrick party behind Hamlin, with a third-best speed of 95.237 mph in a Chip Ganassi
Racing with Felix Sabates Dodge.

Positions six through 10 were occupied by Dave Blaney, first of the go-or-go-home cars, Scott Riggs, Travis Kvapil, Kurt Busch and David Ragan.

Qualifying is scheduled for 3:40 p.m. and will be broadcast live on SPEED.
