The already close relationship between Stewart Haas Racing and Hendrick Motorsports became positively incestuous Friday, with the announcement that Hendrick engineer Darian Grubb will become Tony Stewart’s crew chief in 2009.

And with Stewart looking to hire Red Bull Racing Vice President and General Manager Jay Frye — a longtime friend of Rick Hendrick — the relationship could grow closer still. Hendrick Motorsports will build the cars and supply the engines for Stewart Haas next season, as well as provide engineering support.

Grubb, who was introduced as Stewart’s 2009 crew chief in a Friday morning press conference at RIR, joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2003 as engineer for the No. 48 team under
the direction of crew chief Chad Knaus and team manager Brian Whitesell. Grubb was promoted to lead engineer for the Nos. 24 and 48 Sprint Cup teams in 2005. He became Hendrick Motorsports’ lead race engineer in 2006 while simultaneously serving as the No. 48 team’s race day engineer. In 2007, Grubb was crew chief for Casey Mears before this season being promoted to engineering manager for the cars driven by Mears and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

And in case there was any question about the relationship, Friday’s Stewart Haas press conference was attended by several Hendrick Motorsports representatives, including Vice President of Development Doug Duchardt and members of Hendrick’s public relations staff.
