Hendrick Motorsports continued to look like the team to beat in the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, as four-time event winner Jeff Gordon paced the first of two Saturday afternoon NASCAR Sprint Cup practice sessions at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Gordon had a best lap of 174.496 mph, which was enough to put his Chevrolet Impala SS atop the speed charts in the early session. His teammate, Brickyard pole-sitter Jimmie Johnson, was close behind at 173.910 mph, which placed him fourth among the 43 cars taking times in the session.
“As a whole Hendrick Motorsports and this DuPont Chevrolet team came so well prepared for this weekend,” said Gordon. “I am so proud and having a lot of fun out there.”
Sandwiched between the two Hendrick Chevrolets were the Roush Fenway Racing Ford of Greg Biffle, 174.243 mph, and Penske Racing’s Ryan Newman, who ran 174.236 mph. Completing the top five was the first Toyota Camry driver, Denny Hamlin, with a best lap of 173.789 mph in his Joe Gibbs Racing entry.

The final “Happy Hour” practice round is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EDT.
