Jeff Gordon paced Friday’s lone round of NASCAR Sprint Cup practice at Richmond International Raceway, but rookie Joey Logano showed he is indeed a fast learner, too.

Gordon, who is looking to lock himself into the Chase for the Sprint Cup, ran 121.534 miles per hour in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS, best of the 46 cars taking time at the 0.75-mile RIR oval.

Second-fast was the Roush Fenway Racing Ford Fusion of David Ragan, currently 13th in points, who had a fast lap of 121.529 mph. He was followed by Juan Pablo Montoya at 121.419 mph in a Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Dodge, along with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in a second Hendrick Chevy. Mark Martin completed the top five in a Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevy, 121.294, then it was Greg Biffle in another Roush Ford.

Logano, who is attempting to make his first Sprint Cup race, wasn’t far behind in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, finishing the practice ninth at 120.730 mph.

Martin, a longtime champion of the 18-year-old Logano, wasn’t the least bit surprised. “The kid has got in there and done it ever since he was 10 years old,” said Martin. “I know what I am looking at. I knew he was better than the rest. Same thing you see today, just amazing. Same thing. He is fast. He knows what he is doing.”

If Logano is to qualify for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup race, he has to hope for some help from Mother Nature. With Tropical Storm Hanna, rain is forecast for late this afternoon at RIR. Qualifying
is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. and in order for Logano to make the race, he must qualify on speed and all 46 cars must make qualifying attempts.
