Saturday night’s Chevy Rock ‘N’ Roll 400 at Richmond International Raceway is the 26th and final race of NASCAR’s regular season, the final chance for drivers to secure a place Chase for the Sprint Cup. Once the checkered flag falls Saturday night, the top 12 drivers in points will advance to the 10-race, season-ending Chase.

One of the drivers hoping to make the final cut is Jeff Gordon, driver of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS. Gordon, a four-time series champion, has suffered through a peculiar year, as he and crew chief Steve Letarte have been unable to come up with cars that both feel good to Gordon and are fast. The only thing consistent this season has been the team’s inconsistency.

As
a result, Gordon heads into Saturday night’s race in a somewhat tentative position, 10th in points and just 102 points ahead of 13th-place David Ragan. Gordon can clinch his fourth appearance in the Chase in five years if he finishes 23rd or better at Richmond. It’s not an entirely comfortable position to be in.

“If we run like we’re capable of running, then we shouldn’t have to worry about scenarios,” Gordon said. “We need to have a complete weekend, from a good practice session on Friday to a strong qualifying effort Friday night. And follow that up with a strong run and finish Saturday night. Hopefully, we won’t have to concern ourselves with how the other teams are faring during the race.”
