Furniture Row Racing, one of the few NASCAR Sprint Cup teams actually looking to do more in 2010 than it did in ‘09, announced Monday that crew chief Jay Guy and the team have mutually agreed to part ways.

Guy is departing the team after three seasons to join Penske Racing, where he will serve as crew chief for Brad Keselowski on the No. 12 Dodge Charger.

“We wish Jay all the best — he is a good friend who worked hard to help bring us to where we are at,” said the team’s general manager Joe Garone. “Jay was a true asset to our organization the past three years and we support him with his new opportunity.”

The Denver-based team cut back to a part-time schedule in 2009 due to the slumping U.S. economy. All told, Furniture Row entered the No. 78 Chevrolet Impala SS in 20 Cup races in 2009, with driver Regan Smith making the show 18 times.

Smith, who joined the team this year after spending his rookie season of 2008 at Dale Earnhardt Inc., had a best finish of 12th in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway and finished the 2009 campaign a respectable 39th in points.

Next year, Furniture Row intends to resume running the entire Cup schedule with Smith behind the wheel. Smith, the 2008 Raybestos Rookie of the Year, set a NASCAR record by completing the first 52 races of his Cup career without a single DNF.

“The future is exciting at Furniture Row Racing,” said Garone. “We are continuing to expand our resources to run a full schedule next year and are on the right track towards giving our driver Regan Smith the best tools possible to race competitively on a weekly basis.”
