MEET THE PREZ — Three-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson came away from this week’s meeting with President Obama duly impressed. The Pres, according to Johnson, came across pretty much as a regular guy.
“It was a great experience,” Johnson said. “To go up and meet President Bush and then to meet President Obama, it couldn't have been more different. It was much more conversational and comfortable and social and relaxed and it was just a totally different feel.”
And Johnson liked what he saw at the White House. “You almost felt like you could leave there and have a beer with the guy, which was interesting,” said Johnson. “He (Obama) pointed out a photo on the wall of him and some friends sitting around a table having a beer, which was interesting to me too. He just seemed like a down-to-earth guy and regardless of your points of view on politics and which party you pulled for and voted for, he seemed like a great man and hopefully leads us in the right direction.”
GOOD TO GO Juan Pablo Montoya, who is in an excellent position to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup for the first time, said he is confident that his Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates team is good enough to get the job done.
“I think we’ve got very good momentum in our sight,” said Montoya, who is seventh in points, 108 up on 13th-place Kyle Busch. “Our team everybody is really focusing on building good race cars. We keep finding lighter race cars, better parts, better set-ups and everybody is just very motivated right now to run good. It’s not about proving anybody right or wrong, it’s about getting the job done. They understand why we are here and it seems to be working pretty good.”
