FUELED UP — NASCAR officials are researching the possibility of replacing carburetors with fuel injection, but if such a move happens, it’s not likely for the 2010 season. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a NASCAR official told SPEEDtv.com Friday that researchers for the sanctioning body met recently with team owners, engine builders and other constituents, but that discussions are purely in the research phase for the moment.

Asked if one or more of NASCAR’s top divisions might convert to fuel injection as early as next year, the NASCAR official said, “I don’t see it happening.”

NOT TALKING — Depending on who you believe, Brad Keselowski has either: A. Signed a contract with Penske Championship Racing to run full-time in the Sprint Cup Series next year, replacing David Stremme. B. Will drive for Hendrick Motorsports in some capacity or in concert with either JR Motorsports or Stewart-Haas Racing, two teams with strong Hendrick ties. Or C. None of the above. As for Keselowski, he’s not talking about what he’s doing.

“I really am not in a position to talk about any of that stuff right now,” Keselowski told SceneDaily.com following his winning the pole Friday for the Food City 250. “I’m really not prepared to address any of the rumors about next year.”

FIRING BACK —
Despite leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup points comfortably, Tony Stewart was not especially pleased with some of the questions posed to him at Bristol Motor Speedway during Friday’s press availability — even when those questions were of the softball variety.

Asked why he thought Bristol drew 160,000 fans, Stewart told a reporter: “Get off your chair and go outside and look. That’s an easy answer. That’s one you can answer yourself. You’ve just got to look at this place. There’s nowhere else you can go in the country and see a race track and facility like this where you can pack that many people around such a small race track. I mean this is an awesome site whether there’s a person in the grandstands or not. It’s just an awesome facility. For 160,000 people to be this close to the action like they are that’s an answer that speaks for itself.”

When someone else asked him if the success of his first-year team surprised him, Stewart retorted, “Some of the guys in the media have been more surprising than anything. Some of the questions I've been asked this year have absolutely blown me away more than anything we've done at the race shop or at the race track. But no, I mean none of us expected it to be this good this soon. You can look at a transcript for the last 25 weeks and it'll tell you that. It's the same answer.”
