SMASHING AFTERNOON – Happy Hour practice for the Nationwide Series was interrupted late in the session by a backstretch accident that seriously damaged the cars of Joey Gase and Brad Sweet. Gase had slowed to avoid Brad Teague and was hit violently by Sweet, an impact that sent Gase's car into the air and ripped both cars. Kevin Harvick's car received minor damage.

KEZ LEADS PRACTICEBrad Keselowski, who lists Bristol as one of his favorite tracks, led the first Sprint Cup practice of the weekend with a speed of 129.047 miles per hour. Several drivers traded spots atop the speed chart in the final minutes of the session. Following in the top five were Matt Kenseth, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin. DILLON FASTEST – Austin Dillon led Nationwide practice Friday morning, with Alex Bowman, Regan Smith, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch following. Now it's Sprint Cup drivers' turn on the track. Cup practice is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. on SPEED.

TRACK SMACK – Jimmie Johnson is standing by his position that NASCAR and competing teams have done virtually all they can to improve on-track competition. The next steps belong to the speedways, he said Friday. "I do sympathize with the track owners in trying to create the right surface," Johnson said. "We have to keep the fans in mind and keep people buying tickets. I don't have the magic sauce. Looking at the competition side of NASCAR, we've exhausted all avenues. The cars are equal. If we have race tracks with multiple grooves and multiple lanes and high tire falloff, I think you'll see great racing."

ANNETT ANXIOUS – Nationwide driver Michael Annett, who suffered a broken sternum in a crash during Speedweeks at Daytona, said Friday he hopes to trim his downtime from a projected eight weeks to six or seven. "Honestly, I feel like I could be putting my suit on right now and going to the car and get ready for practice," he said. "Unfortunately, my sternum doesn't feel the same way. The pain is gone pretty much right now, but ... there are certain things I do where I get a little bit cocky and think I can do more than I can and tweak it a little bit. It's just about time and everything healing back."

MAKING LAPS – Practice for Saturday's Grit Chips 300 Nationwide Series race has begun. The top five in points three races into the season – Sam Hornish Jr., Justin Allgaier, Elliott Sadler, Brian Scott, Regan Smith. The practice will run through 11:50 a.m.

CLEMENTS RETURNS – Jeremy Clements, suspended by NASCAR after using a racial slur during a session with a reporter at Daytona International Speedway last month, returned to racing Friday. During a press conference at BMS, he apologized again for using the derogatory term and said he is moving forward and hopes to put the incident behind him. NASCAR required Clements to attend a counseling session before being reinstated. "Hopefully putting a period on this chapter n getting back to business!" Clements tweeted after the press conference. He missed the Nationwide races at Phoenix and Las Vegas while on suspension.
