Carl Edwards took the second 25-lap segment of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday night, as pole-sitter Kyle Busch suffered an apparent dropped cylinder in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
After the first segment, the entire field pitted, with many of the front-runners opting for only two tires. The order after pit stops was Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, Bobby Labonte, Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth. Jeff Burton and Dale Jarrett were sent to the back of the field for pit-road violations.
On the restart, which was double-file, Kyle Busch got off to a huge jump, opening a lead of 0.867 seconds on the very first green flag lap. Edwards, the other three-time Cup race winner besides Kyle Busch, took second from Newman on Lap 27.
By Lap 30, though, Busch already was 1.724 seconds ahead of Edwards and appeared to be cruising to his second consecutive segment win. One lap later, Dale Earnhardt Jr. took third from Newman.
Then, on Lap 35, Kyle Busch’s Toyota dropped a cylinder and his margin began shrinking as Edwards closed on him, taking the lead for the first time on Lap 39. Two laps later, Earnhardt took over second place.
Edwards held on to capture the segment over Earnhardt, Matt Kenseth, Newman and Biffle.
