It seems a safe Yuletide prediction that Carl Edwards won’t be looking for a Frisbee under the Christmas tree next week.

Edwards fractured his right foot in a Frisbee-related accident in September and hobbled around garage areas on crutches for a few weeks. He was diving for a disc during competition with friends, and someone stepped on his foot, causing the fracture.

It was among the most unusual injuries to ever impact a NASCAR driver, most of them having never risen to the level of competitive disc. Edwards, who enjoys a wide range of sports, is an exception.

Edwards was fifth in points when he was injured. He finished 11th, one spot from earning an invitation to the postseason awards banquet, and he ended the year without a victory. He made no attempts to blame any of that on the Frisbee malfunction, however, and now says he’ll be close to operating at peak levels when the 2010 season opens.

The Roush Fenway Racing driver said his injured foot is about 80 percent healed. Would that mean a return of his now-familiar victory backflip if he ends his winless string by claiming the Daytona 500, NASCAR’s biggest event and the season opener?

Despite lingering effects from the injury, that would be very tempting, he said.

“I imagine if I win the Daytona 500, I’ll hack the foot off, and it won’t bother me,” he said. “Maybe I can land on it, anyway. I guess it depends on how much water is in the ground.”

Although he qualified for the Chase For The Sprint Cup, Edwards had a mostly forgettable 2009, particularly in comparison to 2008, when he won nine races and finished second to champion Jimmie Johnson in points. Among the disappointments this season was a total of only 14 top-10s, compared to 24 for Johnson – a wide gap in results.

Edwards also was winless in 2006, so it wasn’t his first bad parade.
