Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne put their Dodges atop the speed charts during Thursday’s opening round of practice for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
But the news was decidedly mixed for Busch after a right-front tire failure late in the session put his Penske Racing Dodge into the outside wall at the exit of Turn 2. That forced him to a back-up.
Busch, who won last week at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and was the Daytona 500 runner up here in February, had a best lap of 189.633 miles per hour during Thursday’s session. But he was trying to complete a full 45- to 50-lap fuel run when his right-front failed after about 40 laps, sending him into the wall. Worse yet, it was the same car Busch had used at the Daytona 500, where he helped teammate Ryan Newman win with a last-lap push.
Second fast in the session was the Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodge of Kasey Kahne at 189.143 mph. Then it was the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Tony Stewart at 188.846 mph, David Ragan’s Roush Fenway Racing Ford at 188.513 mph and Jeff Burton, 188.450 mph in a Richard Childress Racing Chevy.
The second five was Bobby Labonte, Robby Gordon, Paul Menard, Denny Hamlin and Casey Mears.
Martin Truex Jr. had his primary car seized by NASCAR prior to practice because it failed to fit NASCAR’s roof templates. That forced his Dale
NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch lightly scraped the wall during the session, but damage was minimal.
Tonight’s final “Happy Hour” practice session is from 6:35-7:45 p.m. EDT, with qualifying Friday afternoon at 4:10 p.m. Both Happy Hour and qualifying will be televised live on SPEED.
