Toyotas continued to dominate Thursday’s practice sessions at Darlington Raceway, with AJ Allmendinger pacing the evening session of practice for Saturday’s Dodge Challenger 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Allmendinger hustled his Red Bull Racing Camry around the newly repaved 1.366-mile track with a fast lap of 178.679 miles per hour, leading a Toyota sweep of three of the top four spots.
The only Chevrolet in the top five was second-place Dale Earnhardt Jr., who cranked out a lap of 178.640 mph in his throwback Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.
Behind Earnhardt were Dave Blaney’s Bill Davis Racing Toyota at 178.620 mph and Kyle Busch in the first of three Joe Gibbs Racing Toyotas at 177.249. Rounding out the top five was the Roush Fenway Ford of Greg Biffle, 176.676 mph
Busch, of course, is the NASCAR Sprint Cup points leader, but both Blaney and Allmendinger are among the so-called “go-or-go-homers” who will have to qualify on speed Friday. The good news for them is that there are only 45 cars entered in the field, so there will only be two DNQs tomorrow.
SPEED will televise two practice sessions and qualifying on Friday. The practices are noon to 1:30 p.m. and 2-3 p.m., with qualifying at 5:15 p.m.
