Brienne Davis, a NASCAR engine inspector, was killed Tuesday in a single-vehicle accident that occurred near Huntersville, N.C., north of Charlotte.

Davis, 28, a native of Louisiana, died after her pickup truck flipped on I-77 near Huntersville. She was airlifted from the accident scene to Carolinas Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

One of the few female NASCAR inspectors, Davis got her start in the sport at the age of 22 when she went to work as an engine builder at Dale Earnhardt Incorporated.

She joined NASCAR in 2004. Her duties including tearing down the engines of the first, second and pole-winning cars at each Sprint Cup race.

“We are deeply saddened at the loss of NASCAR Sprint Cup official Brienne Davis,” NASCAR said in a statement released
by the sanctioning body. “She was a key member of our team of inspectors and will be missed by the NASCAR community. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends.”
