The Michael Waltrip Racing rebound continues.
Clint Bowyer put an MWR Toyota on the top of the speed chart Friday as Sprint Cup teams opened practice for Sunday’s Auto Club 400 at Auto Club Speedway.
Bowyer ran 185.109 miles per hour to lead the list of 46 drivers participating in the 90-minute session.
Bowyer had the session’s only sub-39-second lap.
Completing the top five were Mark Martin (also in an MWR car), Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Denny Hamlin.
Two MWR drivers – Bowyer (eighth) and Martin Truex Jr. (fourth) – are in the point standings top eight entering Sunday’s race, the fifth of the season.
Qualifying for the 400 is scheduled at 7 p.m. (ET) Friday. SPEED will broadcast the session.
