Bill Elliott, in addition to his part-time gig driving the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford on the Sprint Cup circuit, has taken on a couple of new assignments in the world of motorsports.

He’s the spotter for his 13-year-old son Chase, who is racing a Late Model car in touring events at tracks around the Southeast. He’s also become the team’s transporter driver, which likely has caused a few double-takes by motorists who see his familiar face behind the wheel of a massive Freightliner.

On Thursday, Bill Elliott, the gear jammer, was driving up the Interstate 85 to Anderson, S.C., where his son is set to run his fourth race ever in short track racing’s elite division.

Cindy Elliott seemed a little worried about her husband’s handling of an 18-wheeler, even though he’s the same guy who once ran a lap at Talladega at 212.809 miles per hour and is a capable jet pilot.

Chase Elliott sounded cool as his dad, at one point passing the cell phone to his father and saying, “It’s for you, Pop.”

So far, young Elliott’s confident demeanor is being backed up by his results on the track.

In his first race in a Late Model, at South Georgia Motorsports Park near Valdosta, Chase drove like a veteran, qualifying eighth, and finishing sixth against a strong field of Southern short track stars who compete in the ASA Late Model South Series. He moved on to Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, where he bounced=2 0back from a couple of spins to finish seventh.

Last week at Lanier National Speedway, the 3/8-mile oval across the highway from Road Atlanta, young Elliott had his best run yet. He started 16th and drove through the field to finish sixth.

“I should have had fifth,” he said. “I was under the guy and about to pass him when the caution came out.”
