Denny Hamlin dominated, but Carl Edwards played the fuel-mileage game to perfection to win the Kobalt Tools 500 at Phoenix International Raceway and set up a dramatic season finale next week in South Florida.

Hamlin led 190 of 312 laps, but pitted with 14 laps to go, while Edwards and Jimmie Johnson stayed out, barely making it on fuel until the end.

In the final rundown, Edwards drove to victory in his No. 99 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, breaking a 70-race winless streak that stretched back to Homestead-Miami Speedway in 2008. Spring Phoenix winner Ryan Newman was second in his No. 39 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet, followed by Joey Logano's No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and Greg Biffle in a second Roush Ford.

Four-time defending NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson rallied to finish fifth, one position ahead of Kevin Harvick, while Hamlin ended the race in 12th.

Now, with only next Sunday’s Ford 400 on the schedule, Hamlin leads Johnson by 15 points and 46 up on Harvick.

For Edwards, the victory was huge for a host of reasons.

“A win is very important to us,” said Edwards, who also won Saturday’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race at PIR. “It's a very big accomplishment for us. I think it's something that we needed for our confidence. We needed it as a payoff for all the hard work the guys have put in at the shop, the engine department.”

It also bodes well for next week, when the Roush Fenway squad will race at Homestead, one of the team’s very best tracks.

“It would be nice to get another one at Homestead,” said Edwards. “But to go into the offseason knowing that we're getting better, looks like we have a legitimate shot to finish fourth in the points, to be in the (Sprint) All-Star Race next season, to have that energy going forward, all those things are good.”

Team co-owner Jack Roush said, he, too, was looking forward to wrapping up the year on a strong note.

“We're off to Homestead with the opportunity to win another Nationwide race and a Cup race. That track has been very good for us,” said Roush, the winning car owner in six of the previous 11 Homestead races. “It's going to really end our year — unless we stub our toes at (Homestead) — on a great note. That will give us something to winter on even though we can't celebrate a championship.”
