In the last eight NASCAR Sprint Cup races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, eight different drivers have visited victory lane.

But none of those eight was named Jeff Gordon, and the four-time series champion would like become the ninth different NHMS winner in as many races with a victory in Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301.

Gordon has three victories here already, but the most recent one came way back in 1998, when Ray Evernham was his crew chief and Gordon was headed to his third title. Since then, Gordon has managed runner-up finishes four times at the 1.058-mile NHMS oval, but has not been able to reach victory lane.

This time around, Gordon will have the advantage of rolling off second in Sunday’s race after qualifying was rained out on Friday. It will be his best starting position here since Sept. 2005.

And Gordon wants to have a good showing, as this track will also be the site of the first race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup in September. “We feel like this is a very important race, very important track,” said Gordon, who is second in the Sprint Cup points standings. “We are in a position in the points to be a little more risky in our setup, in our pit strategy. But the most important thing is getting the car really dialed in this weekend so that when we come back for the Chase, that we start it off right.”

Track position will be crucial on Sunday, Gordon said. And the double-file restarts and pit strategy could decide who the eventual race victor will be.
