Kyle Busch will start the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV from the pole, leading a 24-car field to the green flag Saturday night in search of a winner’s purse of more than $1 million.

Qualifying for this event consisted of the fastest total time over three laps, during which each driver was required to make a four-tire pit stop.

Busch, who has had an amazing season so far, took seconds to compete qualifying, putting him on the pole by half a second, with a total time of 121.95 seconds or 132.835 mph, more than enough to knock off Jeff Gordon.

Gordon’s total time was 122.49 seconds, which translated to an average speed of 132.251 mph for the three-time All-Star race winner. Finishing behind Gordon were Kurt Busch, who took 123.15 seconds to complete three laps and a pit stop in his Penske Dodge and the Dale Earnhardt Inc. Chevrolet of Martin Truex Jr. at 123.32 seconds. Greg Biffle was fifth in a Roush Fenway Ford.

Several high-profile drivers had penalties or problems of one sort or another. Jimmie Johnson was penalized for pitting outside the box, while Carl Edwards was too fast entering pit road. Both will start the All-Star race at the back of the field. Kevin Harvick was penalized for a loose lugnut, which cost him a potential front-row spot, and Casey Mears got busted for having his crew over the wall too soon.

Also suffering calamity on pit road was Denny Hamlin, who spun his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota entering pit road, doing a full 360-degree rotation. His teammate, Tony Stewart, had to replace a motor after practice and he, too, will start at the
back of the field on Saturday night.

A total of 21 drivers are already locked into tomorrow night’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV, which will be televised live on SPEED, starting at 7 p.m. Three other drivers will make into the big show: the top-two finishers in the preliminary Sprint Showdown race and a driver who will be voted in by fans.
