Jerry Caldwell, who was acting general manager at Bristol Motor Speedway for the last year, has been promoted to general manager of the racing facility.

Caldwell will direct operations of the track, previously run by BMS President Jeff Byrd, who died Oct. 17 after a lengthy illness.

Caldwell, 35, previously served as vice president of corporate sales and has worked at Bristol since 1997. Speedway Motorsports Inc. Chairman Bruton Smith announced the promotion Monday.

“Everyone who knew Jeff knows the big shoes I have to fill,” Caldwell said in a news release. “He was my mentor and the greatest compliment I can pay him is to work as hard as I can with the great team we have in place here to take Bristol Motor Speedway and Dragway to another level, just like he did when he came here.

“There is no replacing Jeff Byrd, but I greatly appreciate the confidence that Bruton and the rest of the SMI team have put in me and our team here.”

A three-time BMS Salesperson of the Year, Caldwell also has been honored in the past as BMS Employee of the Year and SMI Salesperson of the Year.
