Clint Bowyer, the man on the bubble, opened a big weekend at Richmond International Raceway by leading the first practice for Saturday night’s Air Guard 400, the final race before the Chase.

Bowyer is in 12th in Sprint Cup points and thus holds down the final Chase qualifying spot entering Saturday’s race. He is 117 points ahead of 13th-place Ryan Newman, who was second in Friday’s first practice.

Bowyer ran a top lap of 122.688 mph. Newman was next at 122.438.

Following in the top five were Juan Pablo Montoya, Carl Edwards and David Reutimann.

Series point leader Kevin Harvick was 10th in the session, and defending series champion Jimmie Johnson was seventh.

A second practice is scheduled at 2:45 p.m. Friday.
