Even with the disappointment of last season, one in which he and his Richard Childress Racing teammates failed to make the Chase, Clint Bowyer had something to celebrate this offseason. He remained with the same team, and there’s a strong sense of continuity heading into the 2010 season.
This time last year, Bowyer was transitioning from his former No. 07 team to the No. 33 in a swap with former teammate Casey Mears.
“It took time to get everything in place,” Bowyer said. “There’s not going to be that void this season. We just have to keep working on our chemistry, getting better on our communication and stay focused on the little things that make the big difference.”
Bowyer and crew chief Shane Wilson return with the same core group of personnel intact. It was a priority for Wilson entering the offseason to keep changes to a minimum, and according to a team spokesman, he’ll begin the new season with the same team he left Homestead with last November.
“I don’t want to change our group. We can overcome anything that’s thrown at us,” Wilson said. “We’re pretty happy with the group. The driver has some faith in us and we have faith in the driver. We can deal with whatever happens.
“I just think we’ll be a little bit better as a group and that will hopefully get us to the next level.”
Bowyer, 30, is entering his fifth season at NASCAR’s uppermost level and trying to regain his place among the elite drivers in the Sprint Cup Series.
He was third and fifth in points, respectively, in the two seasons prior to last year’s forgettable 15th-place finish.
