Greg Biffle drove his Roush Fenway Ford to an easy victory in the third 25-lap segment of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday night.
After the first two segments, there was a mandatory 10-minute break, during which time the Joe Gibbs Racing crew began thrashing under the hood of Kyle Busch’s Toyota, seeking a cure to the engine woes that dropped Busch from the lead to sixth place at the end of the second segment.
But it was not to be, as Busch’s engine failed, and he would not make the call for the third segment at all. With Busch, one of the heavy pre-race favorites, out of the race, the event now became wide open.
Carl Edwards took the lead at the drop of the green flag, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. got by him on Lap 51 to lead for the first time, as Matt Kenseth soon followed him into second. Edwards quickly began to fall back, though, as at Lap 55 Edwards was sixth behind Earnhardt, Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Ryan Newman and Mark Martin.
By Lap 60, Kenseth and Biffle were all over Earnhardt for the lead. Four laps later, Biffle wheeled around Kenseth into second and then ripped past Earnhardt.
Biffle opened a lead of 3.996 seconds after 72 laps, as Kenseth and Earnhardt fought hard for second, with Earnhardt barely hanging onto the spot at the end of the segment.
