If NASCAR’s Chase For The Sprint Cup began today, Greg Biffle would not be among the 12 drivers who would compete for the series title.

The Roush Fenway Racing wheelman isn’t happy about it, either.

Biffle, who not only made last year’s Chase but won two races in the 10-race championship-determining segment and finished third in points, is 13th in the standings with seven races left before the Chase begins.

“It’s unfortunate where we’re at in points,” Biffle said at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, site of Sunday’s Allstate 400. “It’s obvious that we’re out of the Chase a little bit right now and our last three weeks haven’t been very good. We’re just gonna have to be better; we know we are. We’re nervous about getting in and anything can happen here. We’ve got another race track [where] we didn’t run good at the beginning of the year that’s a good track for us – Atlanta – and Pocono we’ve run hit and miss.

“We’ve been really good there or really bad there, so there are some races we’re concerned about leading up to the cutoff and we know we’re on the bubble, so it’s important to have good finishes right now.”

While Biffle is on the outside of the Chase group looking in, he isn’t far behind. He is just 10 points behind his 12th-place teammate Matt Kenseth and 13 points behind Joe Gibbs Racing's Kyle Busch in 10th.

Biffle has finished no better than 18th in his last four starts. The worst came in the most recent race at Chicagoland Speedway where he placed 31st. Biffle was seventh in the standings before his recent tough stretch sent him tumbling in the points.

“We know where we’re at,” Biffle said. “We know we’re 10 points out and we know we need 60-80 points to be safe and that’s just the way it is. We know we’ve given up a couple hundred in the last three races and that’s pretty amazing if you could think about that.

“I think we’ve given up more than anybody has in probably 10 races in three, so it’s unfortunate, but that’s where we’re at.”

A pair of DNFs earlier in the season - one due a crash at Atlanta, the other due to an engine failure at Bristol - have also contributed to Biffle's place in the standings.

“I’m as mad as can be and I’m sick to my stomach that we’ve put ourselves in this position, but these are the cards we’re dealt and now we’ve got to work our way back forward,” he said. “That’s all we can do. We can’t whine and cry about it; we’ve got to run well and that’s it. We’ve got to run well.”

Biffle is determined to turn the corner on his recent struggles.

“We just got done testing together [Thursday] at New Smyrna [Speedway in Florida],” he said. I think that’s helped us – that helped kind of bring us together away from the race track, not under the pressure, and worked together a little bit. We all know where we’re at.

“We all know we need to run well here and everybody knows they have to do their job. I think everybody is in good spirits.”
