Bill Davis Racing will return to a two-car NASCAR Sprint Cup squad in 2009, despite losing its longtime Cup sponsor Caterpillar for next season.

BDR’s Chief Financial Officer Mike Brown told SPEEDtv.com on Friday that the team expects to have a replacement for Cat on Dave Blaney’s No. 22 next season and another new sponsor for the team’s second car, which will carry No. 23 in 2009. No decision has been made on whether Jacques Villeneuve will return to the team or be replaced by another driver, Brown added.

The team announced earlier this week that Caterpillar, which had been with BDR for a decade, will move to Richard Childress Racing next season and become a primary sponsor for the No. 31 Chevrolet driven by Jeff Burton.

Brown said BDR is already shopping for a replacement for Caterpillar. “We don’t have a deal signed,” said Brown. “Obviously, we’re entertaining anybody who’d like to come up and take a look at it. We feel really good. We’re excited about what the future holds for Bill Davis Racing. We’re confident we’ll have two cars on the track next year.”

The team began the season with two cars, the No. 22 of Blaney and the No. 27 of Villeneuve. But after
failing to qualify for Daytona in his unsponsored Toyota, the Canadian former Formula 1 champion was released. Subsequently, the No. 27 made just three more qualifying attempts before being shuttered for what likely will be the remainder of the season.

Although Brown said he was disappointed to see the Caterpillar relationship dissolve, he said the team was trying to accentuate the positives. “We’ve got to look at it as a positive for us that we can keep running well like we have been the last seven or eight weeks and start anew and hopefully create a relationship with someone else.”
