NASCAR Nationwide Series director Joe Balash hopped around questions Wednesday about his possible candidacy to replace departing Sprint Cup Series director John Darby.

Darby is moving into a managerial role at the NASCAR Research and Development Center, leaving the Sprint Cup Series’ most important technical and enforcement job vacant. As director of NASCAR’s No. 2 series and a respected garage area resident, Balash is considered a candidate to replace Darby.

“I think I’m really very happy in the position of Nationwide Series director,” Balash said. “I’m very happy with what’s happening with our series. We’ll see what the future holds.

“I don’t think anybody could step right in and replace John Darby in the garage in the Sprint Cup Series. That’s going to be something you’ve got to work really, really hard to get to John’s level.”
Balash repeatedly refused to indicate if he would accept the job if it’s offered.

NASCAR is scheduled to reveal much more about its 2010 plans during a press conference at the Research and Development Center Thursday.
