The U.S. Army will be the primary sponsor of Ryan Newman’s No. 39 Stewart Haas Racing Chevrolet Impala SS for 23 of 38 NASCAR Sprint Cup team races next season, the team announced Wednesday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Team co-owner Tony Stewart said that announcements will be forthcoming on Newman’s crew chief and remaining primary sponsor for the other 15 races. In the events where the U.S. Army is not the primary sponsor, it will remain as a major associate sponsor.
With Stewart’s own No. 14 car to be co-sponsored by Office Depot and Old Spice, and Darian Grubb hired as Stewart’s crew chief, the new Stewart Haas venture is taking shape. The team will purchase its cars and engines from Hendrick Motorsports and receive technical support from Hendrick as well. Stewart said his outfit is now focused heavily on hiring the right people to help make the squad competitive.
“We have a stack of resumes right now that we’re going through and assessing people at the shop that are already there and trying to assess which ones are staying and which ones won’t make the cut,” said Stewart. “We’re in the process of getting Ryan’s crew chief hired first and let the two crew chiefs work together and decide who they want as people vs. Darian hiring everybody right now. We feel like it’s the right thing to do to decide who Ryan’s crew chief is going to be first.”
Newman, who is moving over to the team from Penske Racing, said he’s excited about having the Army behind him. “I am extremely honored for the opportunity to drive the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet and proud to represent the men and women who serve and protect our country,” Newman said. “The dedication, teamwork and passion of the soldiers who defend
The Army is moving over to Stewart Haas from Dale Earnhardt Inc., which also is losing Menards, which will sponsor Paul Menard at Yates Racing next season.
