Aric Almirola could be forgiven for being a little excited about the arrival this week of new crew chief Mike Ford.
On his first day at the track with Ford, Almirola led both practice sessions at Talladega Superspeedway as teams prepared for Saturday qualifying and Sunday’s Aaron’s 499.
Almirola had a top speed of 196.725 in the second practice. He led the first practice at 199.172.
Ford joined the Richard Petty Motorsports team this week, replacing Greg Erwin.
Following Almirola in the top five in the second practice were Matt Kenseth, Greg Biffle, Denny Hamlin and Regan Smith.
In the second 10 were David Gilliland, Joey Logano, Marcos Ambrose, Kyle Busch and Clint Bowyer.
Only 34 of the 44 entered teams participated in the second practice.
Qualifying for Sunday’s race is scheduled at noon (ET) Saturday. The session will be televised by SPEED.
