On May 17, SPEED will provide live television coverage of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV and the NASCAR Sprint Showdown from the Lowe’s Motor Speedway. The race will feature the best of the best Sprint Cup drivers, nearly two dozen men who will race for a purse of more than $1 million and bragging rights in the sport’s own backyard.
With no points on the line, the drivers will give no quarter and ask none as they seek one of the sport’s richest purses and all the glory that goes with it. The Sprint All-Star race is a night of high drama and hot tempers, fueled by the lure of big money and the potential to bring your race car home first or bring it back on a wrecker in front of 150,000 rabid race fans at LMS. The race is always nail-biting and dramatic, frequently controversial and one of the most fascinating events on the NASCAR calendar.
“Everyone gets to see their driver go 100 percent every single lap because we really don't have anything to lose other than maybe some guys were thinking about running that car for the (Coca-Cola) 600,” said Denny Hamlin prior to last year’s race. “But most of the time there's a big wreck and it takes them all out anyway. That's what the excitement is for the fans, why it draws so many fans is it's all out and there's no letting a guy pass or anything like that. Everyone has to earn it.” Indeed.
And this year’s race should be among the most hotly contested ever.
The field for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV will consist of:
— Race winners (drivers and owners) from the previous and current NASCAR Sprint Cup seasons.
— Top-two finishers of the Sprint Showdown, a preliminary event for teams not qualified for the all-star event.
— Top Sprint Fan Vote driver, who also finishes on the lead lap of the Sprint Showdown.
— Past event champions.
— NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champions from the previous 10 seasons (1998-2007) who are active drivers and have competed in at least one series event during the 2007 or 2008 seasons.
The format for this year:
— 100 laps/150 miles.
— Four segments of 25 laps each.
— No drivers eliminated in the segments.
— Optional pit stop between first and second segments.
— Red flag/10-minute break between second and third segments.
— Mandatory pit stop between third and fourth segments.
Add it all up and it should be a recipe for non-stop action under the lights at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Stay tuned to SPEED and SPEEDTV.com for anything and everything about the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race XXIV.
