AJ Allmendinger is not a big fan of Talladega Superspeedway, and his flip on the final lap of the Amp Energy Juice 500 just confirmed his feelings about restrictor-plate racing on the 2.66-mile oval.

The Richard Petty Motorsports driver isn’t sure how he got upside down on the final lap. All he knows is he was on his roof skidding along the apron in Turn 1, then hit the inside retaining wall and flipped a couple of times, including a point where his car was virtually vertical in the air.

“I’m all right,” a frustrated Allmendinger said as he walked out of the infield medical center. “It’s not the most fun run I’ve ever had, but it’s Talladega. It’s one of those things. I hate this place. I always have. I always will.”

Allmendinger had spun earlier in the race and lost a couple of laps. He had worked his way back on the lead lap only to get involved in the accident, which also included Stewart-Haas Racing’s Tony Stewart, Front Row Motorsports’ David Gilliland and Red Bull Racing drivers Scott Speed and Kasey Kahne.

“I’m not really sure [what happened],” Allmendinger said. “I wish I could give you a description of what happened. I was just in the middle four-wide.

"I was getting shoved and I got in the right-rear of Michael [Waltrip], but I was on the brakes as hard as I could be getting pushed as hard as I was. It was just one of those things.”

In his fourth year of NASCAR racing, Allmendinger has never flipped like that.

“I’ve never flipped in anything like that,” the former open-wheel racer said. “I guess there’s a first for everything, but that’s the first I never wanted to have.”
