Aflac Inc. announced Wednesday it has signed a multiyear contract to serve as primary sponsor of Carl Edwards beginning in 2009.

Aflac had been an associate sponsor of Edwards (with an occasional race as primary sponsor) since last year and will continue as the official supplemental insurance company for Roush Fenway Racing.

It will replace Office Depot as the primary sponsor for Edwards, who has made the Chase in two of the last three years and has won three races this season.

"We look forward to our expanded relationship with Carl Edwards and the world-class team at Roush Fenway Racing," said Aflac U.S. Operations Chief
Operating Officer Paul S. Amos II. "Our sponsorship has helped put Aflac in front of businesses of every size and consumers throughout the United States.

“We are confident that increasing our involvement with this great motorsports leader will only continue to help our business grow."

Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal estimated the deal at $78 million over three years ($26 million per year). Edwards had recently signed a reported three-year deal that will keep him at Roush Fenway at least through 2011.

Roush Fenway still needs to finalize sponsorship and driver extensions for David Ragan and Greg Biffle for beyond 2008.
