It will be a big weekend in Daytona Beach, Fla., as the NASCAR Sprint Cup circuit heads to town for the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
Saturday night’s race marks the midpoint of the 36-race Sprint Cup season, as well as the first time this year the series visits a track for the second time.
This year’s running of the Fourth of July event will mark the 25th anniversary of Richard Petty’s 200th and final victory, when he narrowly outdueled Cale Yarborough to win a race attended by President Ronald Reagan. That finish was one of NASCAR’s most storied results in its entire 61-year history.
To commemorate Petty’s historic Daytona victory, the driver known as “The King” will display several of his most famous cars, including the 1984 race winner and the Plymouth that he won 27 races with in 1967, at the Daytona 500 Experience, which is located outside the fabled 2.5-mile track. Also on display will be a large collection of Petty memorabilia, including all seven of his Daytona 500 trophies.
A total of 45 cars are entered in the race, which means 10 cars will contest the final eight spots in the field and three drivers will miss the race.
Qualifying will be televised live on SPEED Friday at 4 p.m.
