It was “A Tale of Two Talladegas” for Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin. “It was the best of times” for Tony Stewart. “It was the worst of times” for Denny Hamlin. Stewart’s 43 race losing streak came to an end. Denny Hamlin crashed out while leading. Tony leaped four places in the Chase standings... from 11th to 7th... 203 points behind Jimmie Johnson with six races to go.
How has Tony fared in his Chase races? In 44 Chase races Tony has 4 wins. Curiously, three of those wins came in 2006… the only year he did not qualify for the Chase. His 9% Chase Winning Percentage is almost identical to his 9.4% Career Winning Percentage. He is 3rd among active drivers in Winning Percentage, Top Five Percentage and Top Ten Percentage… behind only Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon. Tony’s 33 Wins ranks him 5th among active drivers and tied for 19th with Fireball Roberts on the All Time list.
Tony has 14 Top Fives in 44 Chase races…32%. (Just under his Career Average of 37%)
His 25 Top Tens in 44 Chase races is 57%. (Just under his Career Average of 59%)
