Day 7
With no filming again today, breakfast is leisurely and we roll out of town around 9 am. Within two minutes we have lost Brandon and Ross and have to circle back around to find them. There’s never a dull moment traveling in Peru. And so the day goes by with a rhythmic pace that is starting to be the norm. Gas, food, ride, stop, take pictures, remount and ride. We let the trucks get ahead, and then play catch up as we real them in with some high-speed miles. Some of the sections of cliff riding demand serious respect and when Brando asks Flavio what to do about it as he gets a little stressed thinking about it, Flavio simply says in his deep voice, “Don’t look down Amigo.” Similar to his comment “not good” in response to someone’s question, “What happens if we get a blow out at 100mph on these roads?” It raises a laugh. We are all such a tight knit group by now, and the level of comfort we have around each other and the respect is such a stark contrast to how stuff is portrayed on reality television shows these days. We are a team working together and whether it’s Jim hanging out in the left hand lane to help the trucks get by a long line of buses, or someone making sure Ross is getting what he needs while he is sick, it’s encouraging to see the true human spirit at work when a group of people have a common goal.

We stop at an Olive bar for coffee, a small restaurant for lunch, and we marvel at the size and magnitude of the cliffs and waves along the ocean. At times, we pause to photograph fleets of fishing boats seeking shelter in private coves, or we pass small shacks where fishermen live with their families, seemingly impervious to the power of the wind that blows off the ocean and pushes us north as we ride. Nightfall finds us back in Ica where the hotel manager convinces us “no disco” tonight. As tired as we all are, we take his word, check in and head to the restaurant for one last dinner together. Tomorrow we have a little work to do to return the bikes to Lima and get back to our regular lives. But tonight we can tell crazy stories of the last days riding BMWs through Peru with a film crew, a crazy Peruvian called Flavio, a bald support truck driver called Brandon to visit the abandoned children of Moquegua.
