Enthusiasts have embraced the athletic ethos of the Toyota GT86, or Scion FR-S as it's known in America. Now comes the open-air version, which debuts in concept form next week at the Geneva motor show.

Toyota says it is still refining the convertible concept for a potential production version. (Photo: Toyota)
Called the FT-86 Open, the concept retains the basics of its coupe sibling, but as the name implies, it's a convertible. The 2+2 sports car uses a multi-layered fabric roof with a glass screen in rear. The exterior wears a bright shade of white, with carryover styling from the coupe. Inside are white seats highlighted by a blue dashboard and yellow accents throughout.

The bones are the same as the coupe, with the FT-86 Open using the same platform and 2-liter boxer four-cylinder making about 200 horsepower. It could be paired with six-speed manual or automatic (with paddle shifters) transmissions. The 2,771 pounds are distributed 53/47 percent with a low center of gravity.

Toyota said it still needs to work on rigidity, balance, aerodynamics and weight for a potential production version. The company said it will use the Geneva show to gauge reaction.
Toyota and Subaru worked together on the GT86 and Subaru BRZ, which share the same underpinnings.
